You might already own one of the Shark upright vacuum cleaners, but now you can also own a Shark robotic vacuum cleaner! The Shark ION RV750 is a Wi-Fi enabled robot vacuum that cleans hard floors and carpets.
Shark ION RV750: Key Features
- Navigates using proximity sensors to avoid obstacles.
- Wi-Fi enabled for remote control with smartphone app or voice control with Amazon Alexa.
- Self-cleaning brush reduces tangling problems with long hair and fibers.
- Dual side brushes sweep edges and corners.
- Side-access dust bin is easy to remove, empty and replace.
- The lithium-ion battery provides more than an hour of cleaning power before self-recharging.
Wi-Fi And App
The Shark ION RV750 is Wi-Fi enabled. You can use your smartphone and the Shark ION robot app to control it from a remote location. The app provides a few basic control options such as starting, stopping and scheduling the robot. It can also alert you if the robotic vacuum cleaner gets stuck during a cleaning session. The RV750 can also work with Amazon Alexa devices if you enable the Shark Skill.
Some owners love the app, while others hate it. This is due to Wi-Fi connection problems. We do not know what the problem is or how to solve it.
It is possible to use the Shark ION RV750 without the smartphone app. You simply press the buttons on the top of the robot: Clean, Dock or Spot. The RV750 does not have a remote control. The smartphone app and Alexa voice control are the only ways in which you can control it remotely.
Floor And Carpet
This Shark ION robot vacuum can clean hardwood floors, vinyl, tile, area rugs and carpets (but obviously not thick carpets). The brushes are gentle and does not scratch the floor surfaces. It probably works better on hard floors than on carpets.
Getting Stuck
It is important to pick up any toys, clothing, extension cords or other items before starting the robot vacuum. This prevents it from getting stuck on loose items.
The height of the robot seems to be somewhere between 3 and 4 inches. It can clean underneath beds and sofas if there is enough headroom. The robot vacuum will make a noise and send an alert to the smartphone app if it gets stuck and needs some human intervention.
Dust And Hair
The Shark ION RV750 is good at picking up pet hair. It also seems to have a HEPA filter. Unfortunately, replacement filters for the RV750 are not always easy to find.
Charging Dock
The Shark ION RV750 has a lithium-ion battery. It will return to the dock to recharge when its battery gets too low. The charging dock needs a clear space around it of at least 3 to 5 feet so that the robot can see it and dock successfully.
Shark ION RV750 vs. RV720
The biggest difference between these two Shark ION robots is that the RV750 model has Wi-Fi connectivity. It can support both the app and Amazon Alexa.
The RV720 does not use Wi-Fi, but it comes with a remote control. The remote has buttons for Clean, Dock or Spot. It also provides scheduling buttons to program a cleaning schedule for the robot vacuum.
So, how does this affect the price tag? Well, the RV750 has a list price of about $380 while the RV720 is about $350. That is only a $30 difference in the list price! Nevertheless, if you do not want the Wi-Fi connectivity, then you can save a few dollars by buying the Shark ION RV720 robot vacuum cleaner.
Shark ION RV750 vs. Roomba
Let us compare it to the cheapest Wi-Fi enabled Roomba that supports its own app and Alexa voice control. The iRobot Roomba 690 seems to meet these criteria. Here is the comparison:
- Shark ION RV750 has two side brushes, compared to only one on the Roomba 690.
- Shark uses boundary marker tape, while Roomba uses virtual wall barrier.
- Both have Wi-Fi connectivity with app and Alexa compatibility.
- Shark has one brush roll, while Roomba has dual multi-surface brushes.
- The RV750 seems to be quieter than the Roomba 690.
- Both robots have a list price of under $400.
This is a tough choice: which one would we buy? We prefer the Roomba 690 because it might be more reliable when it comes to battery life and connectivity.
What is included with the RV750?
- Two side brushes
- One filter
- One lithium-ion battery
- One charging dock
- 9 feet of magnetic boundary marker tape
- Two boundary marker tape connectors
- Cleaning tool
Shark ION RV750: Verdict
The Shark ION RV750 robot vacuum cannot replace an ordinary upright vacuum cleaner when it comes to cleaning power. It is not able to get all the dirt, especially in hard-to-reach places. However, it can do the daily sweeping and brushing. This is especially true if you have pets that shed hair and fur. Hair accumulates almost invisibly until you sweep after a week and see the appalling amount of hair.
The Shark ION RV750 does a good job at removing dog and cat hair from hard floors and carpets. It also picks up debris like grass and leaves that inadvertently gets into the house by way of shoes and feet. The brushes seem to do much better with hair than with dirt and sand.
The Shark ION RV750 has neither laser mapping technology nor virtual wall towers. Instead, it still uses the low-tech magnetic boundary marker tape strips. You put the magnetic tape around the places and objects that you do not want disturbed. The robot vacuum senses these strips and then avoids going over them. Simple, cheap and effective.
We do not know what else to say about the Shark ION RV750 because there are simply too many opinions to consider. You can read for yourself what customers are saying by visiting its product page on Amazon.
